We are very excited to officially announce the release of ‘Athlete of Emotion: Examining the Perdekamp Emotional Method’, a Master’s thesis by Vaughan Slinn.
The thesis takes an in-depth look at the pedagogy of PEM, and contains research evaluated through a combination of a historical review of acting approaches to producing emotion, interviews with PEM creator Stephan Perdekamp and Master Instructor Sarah Victoria, and it’s theoretical underpinnings (and evaluating this against current neuroscience theories concerning emotion).
‘Athlete of Emotion’ further includes research supported by case studies taken from PEM workshop instruction and screen experiments held at Toi Whakaari.
There have been recent international studies that have revealed acute psychological health issues throughout the acting profession, and the thesis suggests ’there is an ethical imperative for drama schools to investigate such techniques’ and investigates the ‘potential value of introducing PEM into the conservatoire model of a tertiary Drama School’.
Vaughann Slinn is the Senior Tutor for Creative & Screen Practice at Toi Whakaari, and a PEM Instructor in training. He studied and wrote his MA at the University of Wellington, New Zealand.
