ABOUT PEM BASICS
PEM Basics offers you a structured pathway to learn the art of physically accessing authentic emotion on demand. Each six-week term delves into one of the Six Basic Emotions in the PEM methodology, providing a comprehensive understanding and practical application of these 6 Basic Emotions.Â
Each emotion is deeply examined from a biological perspective, including it’s origin point in the body, it’s function and movement as well as an exploration of its full spectrum of expression.
This foundation, which we call Emotional Basic Training, gives actors a rich palette of emotional states with which to craft realistic performances.
Upon completion of the series, you will have experienced a profound transformation of your instrument. You will possess an expanded emotional range, a deeper insight into the human experience, and a comprehensive understanding of emotions and how to use them artistically.
This series lays the foundation for all other subjects and pathways in the vast PEM pedagogy, including voice, scene work, character work and more.

PEM BASICS 1: AGGRESSION
Prerequisites: None.
Do you encounter a barrier when portraying anger in a scene or monologue? Perhaps it feels contrived or stereotypical, or maybe it triggers unexpected emotions like tears?
In PEM Basics 1, we’ll deep dive into Aggression and cover the technical, physical means to authentically convey this basic emotion. Aggression will enhance your ability to play characters who exude directness, assertiveness and drive, or who grapple with unresolved anger from their past.
Practical Craft Applications of Aggression
A heated argument, charging into battle, a competitive athlete, a business person who is assertive, etc.
The Range of Aggression
Anger, irritation, power, presence, focus, grit, assertiveness, motivation, passion, determination, rage and more.
PEM BASICS 2: HAPPINESS
Prerequisites: PEM Basics 1 or equivalent private training.
Acting can often pose challenges in maintaining genuine smiles and laughter, especially in repetitive performances or multiple takes. In PEM Basics 2, we’ll take a look at accessing Happiness at will, enabling you to layer your characters with warmth, ease and compassion.
Learn to operate from a space of openness without feeling personally vulnerable. The training over this six weeks will cultivate a fascination for slowness and will allow the actor to embody a deep, quiet presence. Additionally, learn to fully let go and relax to make the most of your down-time between takes, performances and jobs.
Practical Craft Applications of Happiness
A moment of peace, a joyous reunion, a very “chill“ character, a loving parent, etc.
The Range of Happiness
Happiness, joy, relaxation, peace, calm, softness, kindness, contentment, compassion, ecstatic joy and more.

Navigating the intricacies of Grief can be an issue for many actors, especially if you’re relying on personal memories.
In PEM Basics 3, we’ll delve into the profound depths of Grief with our physical, non-traumatic approach and transcend your personal experiences to play with gravitas and maturity.
We’ll also reframe this often misunderstood emotion so that you can experience the strength and power of Grief, allowing you to infuse your characters with rich histories and a grounded presence.

Absolutely! In our experience, it is mastery of the fundamentals that leads to excellence and quality. We can only ever go deeper with our craft and there is always more to learn and uncover. In fact, some of our long-term students have participated in our PEM Basics courses and remarked that they learned new things and made many new discoveries!
Why spend 6 weeks on one emotion? Can I learn them all quicker?
PEM Basics is designed to be an intensive and thorough emotional training program. In our 30 years of experience, we’ve found that it takes this length of time for actors to release personal and cultural programming and start to utilise emotion artistically. By dedicating six weeks to each emotion, you have the opportunity to work deeply with your instrument, bring questions that arise in your personal practice, and establish a strong foundation of the technical principles of PEM’s emotional access. However, if you’re seeking a more condensed exploration of the 6 Basic Emotions, our Online Intro Workshop Series is a streamlined online course for PEM emotion work.
Will these be the only six emotions I will be able to perform?
In the PEM methodology, the 6 Basic Emotions are like primary colours; they can be mixed and combined to create any emotion in the human experience. Training these fundamentals will open up your emotional range tremendously and you will also be able to combine them to create, for example, jealousy, passion, courage, guilt, and much more. Emotional Mixtures are covered from PEM Basics 3 onwards.
How are the sessions structured?
Each session runs for 2hrs each week, and consists of practical exercises, comprehensive emotion theory, group exercises and discussions and individualised feedback.Â
All of our programs and sessions are highly physical and utilise the body, so please be prepared to move and ensure your body is adequately fueled and hydrated.Â
What materials or preparation do I need to bring?
Students are welcome to bring a notebook and pen for taking notes, and we encourage comfortable clothing suitable for movement, and a water bottle.
For online students, we ask that you have access to a device with a working camera and microphone (preferrably a laptop or PC), and a space where you can comfortably move and express without interruption or distraction.
How can I apply the skills learned in this workshop to my acting career?
The techniques learned can be directly applied to auditioning, character development, and performance. You will leave with practical tools to create more nuanced and authentic performances in any acting environment.
Will we work with text?
Yes! Although we focus on clarifying your instrument and accessing authentic emotion first, we begin to introduce authentic text work from PEM Basics 1, and build on this throughout the course series.
Do I need to sign up for all six terms at once?
No! You’re welcome to sign up for each course seperately and as suits you, we only require that you meet the prerequisites for each course.Â
